What are we truly hungry for? 9/24/26

Welcome to today’s devotion. Every day, we are given a fresh opportunity to honor the One who created us. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, we are reminded: 'So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.' Today, let’s shift our perspective toward heart-centered reverence, remembering that what we put on our plates is a beautiful opportunity to steward the temple He entrusted to us. Let’s dive in.
When we read 1 Corinthians 10:31 and are told to 'do it all for the glory of God,' even down to our eating and drinking, it can feel like a heavy standard. For a long time, I couldn't figure out why it felt so hard to honor God with my habits, or why I kept turning to the pantry when I wasn't actually hungry. But as I’ve sat with the Lord, He has gently shown me the missing piece through Psalm 107:9: “For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
I realized that so many times, I am trying to satisfy a soul-level need with physical food.
When I am stressed, bored, lonely, or overwhelmed, my body screams for comfort, and my default reaction is to reach for a snack. But what my soul is actually longing for is the peace, presence, and satisfaction that can only be found in Jesus. Food can dull the ache for a moment, but it can never fill a void meant for Christ.
I want to be clear—I am still very much in the middle of learning this. But I'm discovering that glorifying God with my plate starts with letting Him satisfy my heart first. My prayer for us today is that the next time a sudden craving hits, we can use it as a prompt to pause. Let's let our physical hunger remind us of our spiritual hunger and turn our hearts toward the One who ultimately satisfies our every need.
Before you move on with the rest of your day, I want to leave you with an open invitation to sit with the Lord and gently examine your own heart.
Take a deep breath, look at Psalm 107:9 and 1 Corinthians 10:31 one more time, and ask yourself honestly: What am I using to fill the longing in my soul?
When you feel that internal ache, restlessness, or stress today, what is your automatic default?
Is it food or a quick trip to the pantry?
Is it picking up your phone to mindlessly scroll social media?
Is it online shopping, binging a show, or staying excessively busy?
There is absolutely no shame or condemnation here—only an invitation to awareness. Whatever your "something else" might be, try to catch yourself in the act today. When the urge strikes, pause, hand it over to Christ, and give Him the chance to fill you with the good things only He can provide.
A Prayer to End Our Time Together
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of this day and the gift of my body. I come to You in total surrender, acknowledging that You alone can truly satisfy my soul. Holy Spirit, give me the eyes to see and the courage to notice what I am actually reaching for when I feel empty, stressed, or restless. Reveal the places where I am turning to food, social media, or other distractions instead of turning to You. Forgive me for trying to fill a divine void with worldly things. Guide my steps today, Lord. Help me to pause, to look to You first, and to honor You with every choice I make. In Jesus' name, Amen.
With grace,
Elizabeth
